Synthetic diamonds differ from real diamonds

We are frequently asked how to distinguish natural from synthetic diamonds, as both are real diamonds on a chemical level, but only natural diamonds possess capital preservation and appreciation potential.

Synthetic diamonds differ – due to their manufacturing process – in tiny details from natural diamonds, and these differences can be detected.

Both natural and synthetic diamonds are the best thermal conductors we know, but only natural diamonds are electrical insulators. Synthetic diamonds, on the other hand, are electrical semiconductors. With a combination test device that measures thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity, we can make an initial determination.

Another way to find out whether a diamond is natural or synthetic is to measure its ability to absorb UV light. During the thousands of years of formation of natural diamonds, nitrogen atoms are always trapped, which ensures that UV light is almost completely absorbed in a natural diamond. In synthetic diamonds, however, these nitrogen atoms are missing, so the UV light simply passes through. We conduct this test during quality inspections in our in-house laboratory.

During the manufacturing process of synthetic diamonds, soluble metal is melted until carbon precipitates and a diamond can grow from it. Traces of this “flux” can be detected in synthetic diamonds using the magnetism test. These traces are never found in natural diamonds.

The first synthetic diamonds were made in 1950, and are therefore at most 70 years old. All natural diamonds are several hundred million to about 4 billion years old! Age determination can make a clear distinction.

The safest way to find out if a diamond is natural is to have the stone tested for authenticity by an internationally renowned institution, which enjoys worldwide recognition and absolute trust from all dealers, diamond experts, and professionals.

For this reason, all diamonds offered by us are tested for authenticity and quality by an internationally renowned certification institute.
